This is super-efficient 2day tour to Tunka valley (territory of Buryat republic) allows you to observe many attractions in a very short period of time.
The Tunkinsky valley begins with the southernmost tip of Baikal near which the settlement of Kultuk is located. After that the road turns right and we start crossing Tunka valley. Combination of mountains, dense vegetation, beautiful lakes, the crystal-clear rivers create it is unique picturesque landscapes of the valley. In spite of the fact that people have begun to develop the Tunkinsky valley from time immemorial (settlements of ancient people are dated age of 13,5 thousand years), Tunki's nature has remained almost in a primitive state. The Tunkinsky valley is continuation of the Baikal hollow. It was stretched on 200 km, gradually rising to 1200 m above sea level and being narrowed ot30 to 20 km. From the West the valley is limited to high Tunka Range of East Sayan Mountains with sharply expressed Alpine forms of a relief, from the East - less steep slopes Hamar-Daban. The main river of the valley - Irkut originates from merge of two rivers - the White Irkut which is flowing down from a massif Munku-Sardyk and Black Irkut as which source serves the lake Ilchir. The climate is moderately continental: the summer is warm, winter cold and long. The main wealth of Tunkinskaya are unique curative sources.
After 20 kilometers we will cross the border with Irkutsk region and will be at the territory of Buryat republic. On the way we will see a lot of holly places including different buddists temples. In two hours (90 km) we will reach Arshan village. "Arshan" means spring from Buryat language. It is a very famous hot and cold spring resort which attracts tourists all year round. In winter it is even more interesting to visit this place as Arshan has many hot springs and there is a possibility to take a hot bath. Kyngirga river is the main river of Arshan and a very rapid and extremely cold mountain river, which takes beginning at the top of Hamar-Daban and runs through the gorge forming 12 waterfalls in total. During our being at the village it's very useful and exciting to walk to the first waterfall (9m height). For those who want more activity it is possible to ascend the "the Peak of Love" (2200m) – it's quiet high and the slope is relatively steep, but you will be awarded with the magnificent birds-eye view of the village and surrounding mountain ridges. Then you will be driven back to Irkutsk (from 3 to 4 hours) with a stop at the café with local buryat cuisine.
We had limited time in Irkutsk and I can't think of a better way to see Listvyanka. In one day we managed to see monuments and cathedrals in Irkutsk, drive to Listvyanka, hike to a beautiful vista (lift also available), see the Baikal museum, fish market, walk along the beaches, and see Shaman rock. Dasha's knowledge of history and geology gave us a better understanding of the region. I hope to see more of Baikal someday.
The Baikal tour was a wonderful experience, the natural beauty of area and the scenery amazed us. Dasha was very experienced with respect to the history of the area and natural environment. The tour was extremely well organized and flexible enough to accommodate different tastes, interests and levels of fitness. We will return once again, perhaps in the winter to experience the difference of seasons. Thanks the guide and the team for such a wonderful trip!
